A weekend in Munich

12. July 2025

1,150 readers took part in our competition in SZ Magazin at the beginning of May. The prize draw was two nights at the Bayerischer Hof + tickets for a gallery tour – for two people. Last year, a gentleman wrote to us after a similar competition: “I would have loved to win – it’s the perfect gift for my wife. Now I’m planning it on my own. Do you have any tips for me for the weekend?”
We think many people feel the same way – here are our suggestions for a summer weekend in Munich – for Gallery Weekend from 3.7 – 6.7. And for Munich residents: how about some time out in your own city – treat yourself to a night in the heart of Munich!

The hotel
The Beyond by Geisels is an absolutely convenient starting point for your Munich weekend. https://www.geisel-privathotels.de/beyond
You wake up in your room with a view of the town hall and can find out about the exhibitions in the Gallery Weekend catalog.

The guided tours
Experience art together in a group! Our guides know a lot and will also tell you something about the city on the way from gallery to gallery. https://openart-munich.de/open-art-rundgaenge/

A ROUND THE OPERA
After breakfast, it’s time to set off. How about a rickshaw ride to one of the galleries? Let yourself be driven from Marienplatz to the behncke gallery to see Gerd Rohling’s sweetart. Your way back will take you via the DG Kunstraum over to Florian Sundheimer.

Lunch
You will now reach the famous Schumann’s Bar. Time for the famous fried potatoes. https://schumanns.de/de/schumanns-bar.html Eat with a view of the courtyard garden. Continue through the Hofgarten to the Filser& Gräf Gallery and then to Ping Rodach contemporary.

Maximiliansstraße
Time to walk from Ping Rodach Contemporary to max goelitz gallery and then follow Maximiliansstraße for a coffee at the famous Café Roma? https://roma-cafe.de/ Then on to Galerie Andreas Binder and Gudrun Spielvogel Galerie & Edition

Dinner and finale
We have now ended up at Gudrun Spielvogel in Lehel. Dinner at Gandl is our finale. Dining on St. Anna Square, a wonderful summer evening. https://www.gandl.de/
If you haven’t already done so: Now it’s time for the rickshaw ride back to the hotel.
Have a nightcap in the wine lounge with a view of the town hall and then dream of beautiful Munich.

The annoying thing about the summer feeling and the nice weather is that you don’t get enough time in the hotel. The hotel is arranged in such a way that all the rooms open off a living room and in the middle is the atrium. It’s a great place to spend time – if only it were raining!

The library

is located under the atrium. From your room and on the way into town, it is the ideal place to pause for a moment.
