Undine Bandelin
Die Hauptrolle
04.07.2025 – 02.08.2025
For the opening of the Munich Opera Festival, we are showing the exhibition “DIE HAUPTROLLE” by Leipzig artist Undine Bandelin. In addition to the main work “Die Puppenspieler”, we are also showing motifs from her series “DIE FAMILIE” and “REITER” (see the illustration). In this series of works, the pictorial worlds of baroque aristocratic portraits are juxtaposed with today’s selfie culture, blurring the boundaries between the times and placing them in new, grotesque contexts. Their pictorial space becomes a stage on which the figures negotiate their roles. The great drama or everyday banality is often only a brushstroke apart in the artist’s work. Undine Bandelin was born in Jena in 1980 and studied painting at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle. She has lived and worked in Leipzig since 2012. In 2019, she received a scholarship from the Alexander Tutsek Foundation in Munich, which took her to the Pilchuck Glass School in the USA, as well as scholarships from the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony and the Cultural Foundation of Saxony-Anhalt, and she was awarded the Limburg Art Prize in 2014.
