TINA BERNING & ANNA KRAMMIG

Galerie Andreas Binder is presenting works by Tina Berning and Anna Krammig in the spatially separated exhibition This Time I See It. Anna Krammig and Tina Berning have never met. At first glance, their approaches to representational depiction seem entirely opposed. Krammig fills canvases with figureless spaces, while Berning draws spaceless figures on paper. Yet their semiotics subtly connect them. For both artists, the focus is not on representing a specific place or a concrete person, but rather on what remains – on the traces of memory. Thus, like Anna Krammig’s empty spaces, Tina Berning’s portraits appear both familiar and strange. They can be understood as a matrix of subjective and collective memory, which continually recalls the stored figures and spaces, reconstructs them constantly, and places them in new contexts. By presenting their works together in This Time I See It, the two artists add yet another layer to this matrix.
