ECOCIDE

09.05.2025 – 18.05.2025

Lothringer 13 Halle resets its program and identity under new Artistic Director Kalas Liebfried, starting April 1st. The inaugural CURRENT “Anarchic Animism” and its first PHASE “ECOCIDE” will open May 8th. ECOCIDE* is an annual festival exploring themes at the intersection of politics, ecology, and society. Confronting the destruction of natural and cultural environments, it integrates sustainability and performativity as core principles. ECOCIDE, from Greek oikos (house) and Latin caedere (to kill), refers to large-scale destruction of ecosystems, threatening biodiversity and human life. Rooted in 1970s environmental movements, the term has gained urgency amid climate crises. Advocacy efforts seek its recognition as an international crime. The first edition of ECOCIDE engages with these themes through artistic and research practices on ecology, animism, rituals, and dystopian realities, fostering dialogue on shared responsibility. *ECOCIDE stems from “Fragments of Sonic Extinction”, a project exploring the extinction of natural sounds tied to climate change and biodiversity loss.
