Luo Mingjun is a contemporary avant-garde artist from the Chinese diaspora who has lived in the hills above Biel in Switzerland since 1987. She studied at the Hunan Academy of Fine Arts between 1979 and 1983, then, as assistant professor of drawing at the Academy, was awarded the Hunan Province Prize in 1984. Very early on, she was part of a group of 16 young artists whose work and exhibitions immediately made them stand out among the 20 other major groups of contemporary artists. Her group was called Zero Art Group (Ling yishu jituan). In January 1986, Luo Mingjun wrote their manifesto and declared: „Zero means thinking of the sun, the origin of the world and our ancient traditions. Our consciousness emerges from this ground zero, where the future intersects with the past and extends infinitely forward. Zero is also the perpetually moving wheel of your age that takes us into the future“.
Luo Mingjun now regularly exhibits in Europe und in Asia and was awarded the Ernst Anderfurhen Prize in 1994 and 1996, the Frauenkunstpreis Berne in 2008 and the „Ici et ailleurs“ grant from the canton of Bern in 2017. The exhibitions that have marked her career took place in 2006 at the Creek Art Center in Shanghai, in 2008 at the Centre Pasquart in Biel and in 2016 at the Musée d’art de Pully. Luo Mingjun has also been exhibiting at the best international art fairs for many years, starting with Art Basel through her home gallery in the Baltic States. In recent years, she has also agreed to take part in other European fairs, such as Art Paris and Asia Now, which have always been a great success. She also continues to take part in major projects (including the Caixa forum in Spain in 2008, curated by the famous Gao Minglu). More recently, Luo Mingjun has taken part in residences in Japan and in other important exhibitions, such as „Opening Exhibition of the Collection of the New Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne“, 2019; exhibition “ on paper “ au Musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Neuchâtel 2021; “ Through the Permafrost, Deserts and Glaciers – The Fifth Global Chinese Art Exhibition „, He Xiangning Art Museum, Shenzhen, 2022 ; Contemporary Chinese Art – Exhibition of the Sigg Collection „in the Art Museum Songeun of Séoul, South Korea 2023. In spring 2024, Luo Mingjun will exhibit at the prestigious Museo Correr in Venice.
