Christian Frosch
Malereiforschung - Kabinett
04.07.2025 – 01.10.2025
Within the framework of his overall concept of “painting research,” Christian Frosch has dedicated himself for 25 years to the representation of all processes, utensils, and materials inherent in the painting process. The studio becomes a laboratory in the sense of a place where structured thinking, experimental image creation, and alchemical play come together. The discovery of new concepts and their testing in uniformly defined procedures and experimental setups determines his everyday artistic life. Some of the investigations and experiments culminate in series of works. “Is Christian Frosch a painter? Or is he perhaps a disguised scientist? Frosch doesn’t make it quite so easy for us to answer this question definitively, because his art breaks entirely new ground. He definitely distrusts all clichés of art, and especially of painting, as his early series “Anatomical-Pathological Collection of Painting” demonstrates. He contrasts the genius of the painter, who creates images with wild gestures, with his sober yet mischievous experimental arrangements for painting, and in his art he is content to simply constantly ask: “What does color do? And what can color do?” (Tobias Hoffmann)
