Charlotte Eta Mumm
Sought by Shadows
17.01.2025 – 28.02.2025
Galerie Tanit Munich is pleased to announce ‘Sought by Shadows’, a solo exhibition by Charlotte Eta Mumm. This exhibition features new works that explore layers of perception, shifting dimensions, and the interplay between the tangible and intangible.
Central to the exhibition are Mumm’s multi-layered paper works ‘Sought by Shadows’, created during her 2024 residency at ‘Thread’ in Sinthian, Senegal, hosted by the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. These layered pieces combine dense networks of painted lines with pyrographic drawings, reflecting the fleeting impressions of light, texture, and structure that Mumm encountered in Senegal’s unique environment. The works evoke a meditative rhythm, where forms dissolve into an ungraspable, shimmering totality, challenging the viewer to perceive beyond the surface.
Mumm’s ‘Lasso’ series of shaped canvas paintings uses her own body as a measure—lines marking the circumference of her head, her chest, and her height set the tone for each painting. The process is layered and meticulous; through every layer of paint and sanding, the painting is carved out, as if meaning is being lassoed and pulled into form. These works explore how personal dimensions can map abstract ideas, forming loops that attempt to capture something intangible.
In space, the ‘so oft so soft’ ceramic objects expand this exploration. Cast cement forms with glazed ceramic inlays evoke inner, almost bodily textures. These tactile objects suggest both our physical and emotional dimensions, standing as fragments of something internal yet universal. Resonating with the other bodies of work and their layers.
The works in ‘Sought by Shadows’ form an echo, slightly shifting, and opening up the multiple dimensions of shadows when the perspective changes.
