ANDREAS ZAGLER

vis-à-vis

17.10.2026 – 22.11.2026

In his exhibition *vis-à-vis*, Andreas Zagler presents a visual interplay between two groups of works. The colour objects on display raise questions about reality in the image and its representability. The physical layering and treatment of the impasto-like colour objects create a kind of portrait that confronts the viewer like a living being. This object-like quality meets colour surfaces whose treatment extends across the entire picture plane. These inscriptions in the still-wet paint transform the picture surface into an archive of lived time and past actions. The recurring actions and the passage of time become the central pictorial motif – the subjective is transformed by the artistic act into an objective, visually tangible form. Zagler reveals that existence is inextricably linked to the working of matter. With vis-à-vis, the exhibition becomes a physical encounter within the space, in which the object-like layering and the two-dimensional traces form a counterpart that prompts viewers to ask what is actually to be seen there and how these inscriptions of reality and lived time affect their own being.
